What is salsa? Salsa is a dance, a music and a hot and spicy sauce for food! Salsa, the dance: the dance is a mixture of steps that orginate from many dances, many of them Cuban: here is a list of some of the many dances from which salsa originate:

pachanga, cha cha cha, cuban rumba- guaguanco-colombia-yambu, bolero, son, danzon, habanera, gypsy rumba, cuban mambo, american mambo. bomba

Salsa, the music: the music we know as salsa is a label given to it by Venezuelan Marketeer Izzy Sanabria who needed to increase the appeal of the music that was being played by the Fania AllStars in the 70s: this music was, amongst other styles: guaracha, rumba, cha cha cha, son, bomba, and bolero. The artists in Fania All stars at the time was like a hit list of the best salsa performers in the world: Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, Ray Barreto, Ruben Blades, Jose Feliciano and many more.

Fania Allstars Marketing Executive gave salsa its name, even though it existed a long time before then.

To understand what salsa is, one needs to understand a bit of history and even music. The history in brief..... West Africa exported Rumba and other dances into the Caribbean. Cuba fermented these rythms and called them son, rumba etc. Cuban immigrants exported these rythms to America and mixed them with other Caribbean music from Puerto Rico and Jazz and finally Izzy Sanbria called it Salsa. What a journey! The music and the dances continually develop and form a part of peoples culture, no matter what part of the world they are from. Salsa is truly a world music.
